I started growing my own broccoli sprouts, with a new routine, around 3 months ago and I’m still doing it. In this post I want to compare the cost of doing your own sprouts compared to buying a broccoli supplement. So if you start to make your own broccoli sprouts you need initially these things at least:
- Broccoli Seeds
- Wide Mouth Mason Jars (I use 7 of them right now)
- Mason Jar Sprouting Lids for Wide Mouth Mason Jars (I use also 7 of them for the Mason Jars)
The initial cost are $128 (initial things above from the list plus the seeds). The amount of 2lb is good for around 2 1/2 months daily supply of fresh broccoli sprouts. After the 2 1/2 months you will have only the monthly cost for the seeds which are at around $17.20. Here to consider the time you need to rinse the seeds everyday with water in the morning and evening which is ~30mins. Also you should get an amount of 100-140g broccoli sprouts out of this which leads to 40mg-60mg sulforaphane.
Compared to this you can buy 60 caps of broccoli supplement with 10mg stabilized sulforaphane. To get the recommended 40mg daily intake to get the benefits of many study results, like shown in this post here under the section “How much to eat” you need to intake 4 times the amount of caps. So this will lead to initial costs for the first 2 1/2 months daily supply $69.95 * 4 + $19.98 * 4 = ~$360. After that you have monthly costs (if you subscribe for the 60 caps version) of $69.95 * 2 = ~$140.
So the initial cost are for the first 2 1/2 months ~$128 (growing your own sprouts) compared to ~$360 (buying caps) and after that monthly ~$17.20 (growing your own sprouts) compared to ~$140 (buying caps).
